Carpet beetles or clothes moths?

Damage to fabrics does not identify the insect by itself. Carpet beetle larvae, shed skins or adult beetles may provide useful clues, while moth activity can require a different response. Send clear photographs and tell us which materials are damaged before deciding on a treatment.

Inspect the affected areas

Tell us about carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture and stored textiles, especially items containing natural fibres. We assess accessible edges, sheltered areas and relevant storage to understand where activity is concentrated. Old damage should be distinguished from fresh evidence when discussing the scope of work.

A plan for treatment and cleaning

Suitable treatment depends on the evidence, access and materials involved. Cleaning and removal of relevant accumulations can be important alongside any recommended professional treatment. Ask for preparation instructions before moving belongings between rooms. Follow textile care labels and discuss delicate or valuable items before cleaning or applying products.

Protecting belongings and checking progress

Room treatment does not automatically treat the contents of closed bags, drawers or cupboards. We explain the agreed treatment areas and what belongings need separate attention. Keep a record of fresh sightings or damage and ask which follow-up inspections are included in the quotation.

Book a carpet beetle assessment

Send your postcode, affected rooms, photographs and a description of the damaged items. Tell us about any recent cleaning or pest treatments. Call 0131 440 3263 to discuss inspection for homes, rented properties and commercial premises.

Common questions

Are carpet beetles the same as bed bugs?

No. They are different insects and should not be identified from skin symptoms or fabric damage alone. Photographs, specimens or an inspection can help establish what is present.

Will all my clothes need treatment?

The response depends on the findings and the affected items. Ask for specific preparation and textile-care guidance; do not assume a room treatment also treats every stored garment.
