Rat proofing after treatment: choosing the next step

Reducing rat activity and repairing an entry route are related tasks, but they may happen at different stages. Closing a visible hole without assessment can leave the underlying problem unresolved.

Ask what the inspection found

Request a distinction between confirmed access points and possible openings. Roof defects, wall gaps and drainage problems need different repairs. Ask whether specialist building or drainage work is required and who will carry it out.

Agree the timing

Discuss when proofing should take place in relation to monitoring and treatment. The plan should avoid trapping animals in inaccessible spaces and allow remaining activity to be checked. Keep a record of completed repairs so a later sighting can be assessed against what was actually changed.

Ask about repair evidence

Photographs taken before and after agreed proofing can help future inspections. Record who completed the work and any areas left outstanding. If signs return, those details let the contractor assess the remaining routes rather than repeating recommendations that may already have been carried out.
