Rats near garden bins: finding the attraction

Seeing a rat near garden bins does not prove that a nest is inside the property. Food access, shelter and neighbouring routes all deserve attention before choosing a response.

Check the waste area

Look for damaged bin lids, food spilled around the base and rubbish stored in open bags. Keep lids closed and arrange repairs to damaged containers. Avoid moving accumulated waste without suitable precautions if droppings or nesting material are present.

Record the route

Note where the animal came from and where it disappeared. Photographs from a safe distance can help, but do not block a route or put out loose poison. Tell the inspector about sheds, drains and nearby feeding areas so the assessment includes the wider garden rather than only the bins.

Consider collection day

If activity is mainly reported before bin collection, record that pattern. The information may point to storage capacity or a damaged container needing attention. It does not establish the source by itself, but it helps the inspection consider how the waste routine changes through the week.
