Record signs safely
Note when the noise occurs and its apparent position. Look from outside for visible activity around roof edges without climbing. Do not enter a cramped loft or handle nesting material to try to confirm the animal.
Keep species questions open
Describe sightings accurately and provide photographs if possible. Red and grey squirrels have different legal considerations, so identification is essential before intervention. Tell the technician about roof works or earlier activity. The plan should address the confirmed animal and its access route rather than choosing treatment solely from the sound above a room.
Provide sighting details
If you see a squirrel near the roof, describe its appearance and location accurately and photograph it if safe. Do not assume a species solely because of the sound in the loft. Identification and the property's evidence should guide any specialist advice or proposed intervention.
