A cockroach sighting in a restaurant: organising the first response

A suspected cockroach in a restaurant needs a factual, coordinated response. Staff should know how to report the sighting and who will arrange identification and assess the affected area.

Record and contain the concern

Note the time, exact location and any relevant delivery or maintenance activity. Keep photographs and tell the responsible manager promptly. Follow the business's food-safety procedures for protecting food and managing potentially affected areas.

Support the inspection

Provide access around equipment, storage and service openings. Share cleaning schedules and previous pest reports. Avoid applying unplanned chemicals in food areas. Ask the contractor for findings, recommended actions and follow-up checks, then assign responsibility for each task so the response includes maintenance and housekeeping as well as any treatment.

Include the service timetable

A busy restaurant may have only a short window for equipment access. Tell the contractor about food preparation, deliveries and closing times early. The scope and practical arrangements should protect food and allow inspection without assuming that a visit can be carried out anywhere at any time.
