Suspected cockroaches in a kitchen: identification first

An unfamiliar insect in a kitchen deserves attention, but not every dark beetle is a cockroach. A clear identification prevents unnecessary treatment and helps assess the property's actual risk.

Capture useful evidence

Take a photograph from above with an indication of size if safe. Note the time and location, including whether the insect was near a sink, appliance or delivery. Ask how to retain a sample without handling it directly.

Protect food and arrange inspection

Keep food securely stored and address obvious spills or leaks. Avoid moving potentially affected appliances to another property. Tell the inspector about recurring sightings and any products used. A targeted plan starts with the species and activity pattern rather than a general spray applied wherever the first insect appeared.

Explain the exact appliance area

An insect beside a fridge, beneath a sink or in a food cupboard gives different access information. Record the position before rearranging the room. Tell the inspector if it appeared after equipment was moved, while keeping the sighting separate from assumptions about where it originated.
