A drain inspection chamber and rats: what photographs can show

An open chamber photograph may show pipe openings and the general layout, but it cannot confirm every underground connection. Selecting a fitting from the image alone risks overlooking how water enters and leaves the system.

Gather the layout details

Record approximate pipe sizes and where each visible opening appears to lead, without entering the chamber. Mention recurring rat sightings and any drainage work. Do not assume the largest opening is the sewer outlet or that every opening should be covered.

Request a proper assessment

Ask whether a camera survey or drainage specialist is needed to establish the route. Any protective device must suit the connection and preserve the flow. A useful recommendation should explain the evidence, fitting location and maintenance needs rather than treating a photograph as a complete drainage survey.

Check maintenance requirements for fittings

Any proposed drain protection needs an explanation of access, inspection and what to do if flow problems develop. Ask which contractor will maintain it. A suitable recommendation should cover the future use of the system, not just the first installation into the visible chamber.
