Bird activity near food waste: a business housekeeping review

Food waste can draw birds to a commercial site and make deterrence harder to sustain. Reviewing the waste routine is a practical part of a wider bird-management plan.

Check storage and collection

Look at container lids, spillages and bags left outside. Note whether collections match the volume of waste produced and whether customers or staff leave food in exposed areas. Agree who reports damaged bins.

Combine changes with assessment

Record where birds gather and how activity affects entrances or work areas. Ask a contractor to assess suitable lawful prevention if housekeeping alone is insufficient. Any work involving nests or birds needs the appropriate checks. A written action list helps staff maintain the changes rather than relying on occasional clear-outs when activity becomes noticeable.

Look beyond the bin lid

Outdoor eating, uncovered stock and food dropped during loading can provide attractions elsewhere on the site. Include those areas in the housekeeping review. Keeping the report broad enough to reflect daily operations helps prevent one improved waste point from becoming the only action taken.
