Pigeons on a balcony: assessing a proofing solution

A balcony regularly used by pigeons needs a solution suited to its shape and use. The right assessment considers bird activity, access and maintenance rather than choosing a product from a photograph alone.

Record how the space is used

Describe where birds land, whether nesting is suspected and how doors or windows open. Ask the factor or owner about permission for work on the building. Avoid handling nesting material or disturbing birds to clear the area.

Discuss the system and upkeep

Netting or other anti-roosting measures need suitable fixing points and ongoing inspection. Wild birds and their nests are protected, so the contractor must assess the lawful approach before work. Ask how the balcony will remain accessible and how damaged or loose sections should be reported.

Plan for balcony cleaning access

Tell the surveyor how the balcony is cleaned and whether furniture or plants need moving. A system that prevents birds should still suit the resident's practical use of the space. Ask what should happen if a bird enters before any gap is closed.
