Clothes moth damage: looking beyond the adult moth

Holes in natural-fibre clothing can suggest textile pests, but the insect needs identifying. With clothes moths, attention to larvae and affected materials matters more than simply removing adults seen near a light.

Check quiet storage areas

Inspect accessible garment folds, cupboard corners and items that have been stored undisturbed. Photograph damage and any insects found. Avoid transferring potentially affected clothing into another wardrobe without advice.

Plan fabric care and room access

Follow garment care labels and ask about suitable handling of delicate items. A room treatment does not automatically treat clothing inside closed bags or drawers. Tell the technician which fabrics are affected and how wardrobes are arranged so the preparation plan can address the relevant areas and belongings separately.

Inspect sentimental items thoughtfully

Stored blankets, uniforms and rarely worn wool items can be overlooked during a wardrobe check. If damage is suspected, seek handling advice before laundering something delicate. The insect identification and fabric's care requirements should both guide the next step, rather than using one method for every textile.
