Storing wool clothes: reducing moth risk

Seasonal storage can leave wool garments undisturbed for months. Checking items before putting them away gives you a chance to notice damage or insects while the collection is still manageable.

Start with clean, dry items

Follow the garment's care instructions and allow it to dry fully before storage. Check folds, cuffs and seams, particularly on items that have not been worn recently. Use suitable closed storage and review it periodically rather than forgetting it until the next season.

Respond to signs early

If holes or insects appear, separate the affected items and seek identification. Scented products alone do not establish that an active infestation is controlled. Inspect the cupboard or storage space too, because a plan may need to address both the textiles and the surrounding environment.

Check long-term storage periodically

A closed container should still be inspected if it is damaged or garments are taken in and out. Keep the storage area clean and note any insects found nearby. Good storage reduces opportunities but does not replace identification and assessment when textile damage appears.
