Fleas in a property without pets: why inspection still matters

Finding suspected fleas in a pet-free home can be confusing. Previous animal occupancy or access by animals may be relevant, but jumping insects and bites still need identification before treatment.

Check the property's history

Tell the inspector about recent moves, previous pets and any access to lofts or underfloor spaces. Describe where insects are found rather than assuming every room is affected. Photographs or a safely contained sample can help with identification.

Plan from the findings

Avoid buying several products before the source has been assessed. The inspection may recommend environmental treatment, further investigation or a different response if the insect is not a flea. Ask which rooms require preparation and how progress will be checked, particularly if the property has been vacant or recently refurbished.

Check links with unused spaces

If a home has been empty, mention which rooms stayed closed and whether animals could enter storage areas. This may help the investigation consider the property's history. Do not assume that the absence of a current pet rules out fleas or confirms a different pest.
