Fox visits to gardens: reducing accessible food

A fox passing through a garden does not automatically require control. The frequency of visits, access to food and the impact on the property should guide the response.

Review attractants

Keep food waste in secure containers and review pet food left outside. Clear avoidable food spills and discuss the safety of outdoor animals with an appropriate adviser. Do not approach, feed or attempt to corner a fox.

Describe the actual concern

Record repeated visits and explain what is being affected, such as stored food, animal housing or access to a particular area. Ask for a site assessment if practical changes are insufficient. Recommendations should be proportionate to the evidence and suitable for the setting, without assuming every sighting is an infestation.

Consider shared boundaries

If the same concern affects adjoining gardens, coordinated information may be useful. Share observations without encouraging neighbours to attempt their own control methods. A site assessment can then distinguish food access, routine animal movement and a specific problem that needs further specialist attention.
