Molehills in a garden: planning an assessment

Fresh molehills can disrupt a lawn, but the number of hills does not directly tell you how many animals are present. A survey should consider current activity and how the garden is used.

Record the affected areas

Photograph new hills and note where they appear over time. Tell the contractor about irrigation, buried services and areas children or pets use. Avoid putting household chemicals or improvised devices into tunnels.

Discuss suitability and expectations

Ask whether the findings justify intervention and what approach is appropriate for the site. Access, ground conditions and future monitoring all matter. A clear proposal should explain the work and its limits without claiming that one treatment prevents any mole from using the garden again in the future.

Explain what a damaged lawn affects

A decorative area, play space and access route can have different priorities. Describe the practical impact rather than only the number of hills. That helps the assessment focus on site use, proportionate action and how later observations will be recorded to judge the plan.
