Mice behind kitchen units: preparing for an inspection

Fitted kitchens provide sheltered spaces that are difficult to inspect from the front. When mice are suspected behind units, a little preparation helps the visit without requiring you to dismantle the kitchen.

Make access practical

Clear the floor and move loose items away from cupboard openings. Tell the technician about fixed kickboards, integrated appliances and awkward pipe routes. Do not disconnect gas appliances or electrical equipment to create access.

Keep evidence in context

Photograph damaged packaging and the locations of droppings before disturbing them. Explain which cupboards are affected and whether signs appeared after building work. This helps an inspector decide where further access is justified and what proofing could be practical once the route and activity have been established.

Discuss fixed fittings early

If removing a kickboard requires a joiner or the landlord's permission, identify that before the appointment. A restricted inspection may still provide useful information, but its limits should be understood. Ask which areas remain unexamined and whether another access arrangement would improve the assessment.
