Mouse proofing around pipes: why material matters

Pipework can leave openings between kitchens, floors and service spaces. A visible gap is worth assessing, but filling it with the first material available may create a short-lived repair or obstruct something important.

Inspect the opening properly

Establish what the pipe serves and whether the surrounding material is damaged. Moisture, movement and hidden service connections can affect the repair. Avoid interfering with gas pipes, electrical cables or required ventilation.

Plan proofing with treatment

Ask which openings are likely access points and when they should be closed. Suitable proofing depends on the gap and building surface; a decorative finish alone may not resist gnawing. In shared buildings, sealing one kitchen opening may need to form part of a wider plan involving communal service routes.

Remember concealed sides

The visible kitchen opening may connect to another gap behind a unit or beneath the floor. Ask whether the repair addresses the complete accessible route or only its front face. Knowing the limits helps you plan further access or building work if monitoring continues to show activity.
