Mice in student accommodation: organising a shared response

In a shared Edinburgh flat, a mouse problem can be harder to follow when sightings are reported separately. A common record helps residents and the accommodation provider understand what is happening.

Agree one reporting method

Record sightings with the date, room and a brief description. Keep food in secure containers and agree regular bin emptying. Avoid blaming a particular flatmate: access through building gaps can affect a clean property too.

Arrange coordinated access

Tell the provider which bedrooms and kitchen cupboards need checking and agree an inspection time. Mention pets and any earlier treatments. Do not move traps or monitoring points between rooms. A consistent household approach makes it easier to interpret activity and carry out agreed prevention work.

Plan for changing occupants

If a tenant or flatmate is moving out during treatment, tell the accommodation provider. Room access and household routines may change, and important instructions can be lost. Agree who keeps the reports and ensures the next occupant knows about any outstanding monitoring or repairs.
