Mice in Edinburgh tenement flats: where an inspection starts

A mouse sighting in a tenement flat can involve more than one room. Shared pipe routes and concealed spaces make it useful to understand the building as well as the affected kitchen.

Map the sightings

Write down which rooms are affected, when you noticed activity and whether neighbours have seen similar signs. Photographs taken without touching droppings can help an inspection focus on the right areas. A single sighting does not establish the extent of a problem.

Coordinate access

Ask the landlord or factor about access to communal cupboards and shared service areas. Avoid sealing every suspected opening before the activity has been assessed. A coordinated inspection can identify where treatment and later proofing are needed, rather than repeatedly dealing with sightings in isolation.

A useful building detail

If your flat has recently had a kitchen or bathroom refitted, mention that when booking. Changed pipe connections or unfinished service openings may be worth checking. The inspector can use that history alongside current evidence without assuming the building work caused the problem.
