Mouse droppings in a kitchen: what to do first

Finding small dark droppings beside food cupboards is a reason to investigate. Their appearance can suggest rodents, but photographs alone may not establish the species or whether activity is current.

Protect the food area

Keep people and pets away from contaminated spots and separate affected food from clean supplies. Do not dry-sweep or vacuum suspected rodent droppings. Ask for suitable cleaning advice, especially if contamination is extensive or hidden behind fitted units.

Prepare useful information

Record where the signs were found before cleaning or moving items. Mention chewed packaging, scratching and recent sightings when booking an inspection. The pattern across the kitchen helps distinguish an isolated discovery from wider activity and guides checks around pipe openings, appliances and cupboard bases.

Check adjoining storage

A cupboard containing damaged food packaging may sit beside a cleaner-looking unit that also needs inspection. Tell the technician what is stored on either side and whether the back panel is accessible. Keep the location of each finding clear so the inspection can follow the pattern.
