Pest control before moving into a home: checks worth recording

A move gives you a chance to inspect accessible storage and building edges before furniture is in place. The aim is to identify concerns early, not assume an empty property is automatically pest-free.

Photograph relevant signs

Record damaged packaging left behind, unfamiliar insects and suspected droppings without disturbing them. Note visible door or service gaps and ask about any previous pest reports. Avoid dry sweeping suspected rodent contamination as part of a general move-in clean.

Arrange the right sequence

If there is evidence of activity, ask for identification before treating or sealing suspected routes. Discuss how inspection, cleaning and planned decorating should fit together. Keeping the initial photographs and findings helps separate existing issues from changes that appear later, and gives contractors a clearer starting point.

Retain seller or agent information

If previous pest work is mentioned, ask for the available report and any repair records rather than relying only on a verbal summary. Those documents can inform a fresh inspection. They should not be treated as proof that the property's current condition has been assessed.
