Pigeons near solar panels: what to ask before proofing

Sheltered spaces around rooftop equipment can attract birds, but proofing must suit the roof and the equipment. A property survey should consider access, nesting and the constraints of the installation.

Gather equipment details

Provide the panel layout, installer information and any access restrictions. Do not climb onto the roof or push material beneath panels. Ask the surveyor whether relevant permissions or equipment-provider advice are needed.

Clarify the proposed work

Ask how fittings will be attached without interfering with equipment and how birds will be kept clear of the system during lawful installation. Request a separate explanation of any cleaning and ongoing inspection. A photograph can start the conversation, but final recommendations need the actual layout and condition of the roof to be assessed.

Keep equipment access practical

Ask how inspections or repairs to the panels will happen once proofing is fitted. The system should not be selected without considering that requirement. Retain the installer's details and the bird contractor's recommendations so future trades can coordinate access rather than damaging the proofing during maintenance.
