Rats around bird feeders: practical changes to consider

Food intended for garden birds can also become available to rodents, particularly when seed accumulates beneath feeders. Reviewing the feeding arrangement can support rat prevention without guessing where the animals are nesting.

Check the ground below

Watch for persistent spills and remove accessible food residues appropriately. Avoid leaving loose seed on the ground. If rats are active, discuss whether feeding should pause while the problem is assessed.

Consider shelter and routes

Dense storage, gaps beneath sheds and nearby waste areas can give rodents cover around a feeding point. Record sightings and tell the inspector where seed is stored. Changing the feeder alone may not resolve access to buildings, so combine food management with inspection and any recommended proofing.

Check stored seed as well

A secure feeder arrangement is less useful if bags of seed remain accessible in a nearby shed. Review both locations and mention damaged packaging. Treat food storage and feeding as one system so a change outdoors is not undermined by an overlooked supply close by.
