Rats in a garage: checking storage and openings

A garage offers shelter and often contains items that hide signs of rodent activity. Inspection is easier when the doorway, floor edges and stored materials can be seen.

Review what is stored

Pet food, bird seed and rubbish need secure containers. Photograph chewed bags or damaged insulation before moving them, and do not dry-sweep suspected droppings. Keep heavily contaminated items separate while you seek cleaning advice.

Check accessible entry points

Look at the door threshold and visible service openings without disturbing electrical equipment. Tell the technician about an adjoining house, drainage or a rarely used side door. A garage treatment plan should consider whether the same route could allow rats to reach the home, rather than treating the garage as an isolated space.

Make the floor edges visible

Where safe, move uncontaminated loose storage away from walls before the agreed inspection. Leave suspect materials undisturbed until you have advice. Clear access helps the technician check the building edge and record findings without spending the visit relocating unrelated equipment or boxes.
