Rats beneath decking: why access matters

Decking can conceal food debris, sheltered ground and routes towards a building. Activity underneath it can be difficult to assess without knowing how the structure was built.

Prepare the layout information

Tell the inspector whether panels can be lifted safely, where the edges are open and whether pipes or drains run below. Avoid crawling into confined spaces or dismantling structural parts yourself.

Reduce avoidable attraction

Keep food scraps and spilled bird seed off the deck and review storage around its edges. Do not close every opening while animals may be inside. Treatment and proofing need to be planned together, with enough access to inspect the hidden area and check whether activity is continuing.

Include adjoining structures

Tell the inspector whether the decking joins a shed, extension or external steps. Connected sheltered areas may affect access and where activity can be checked. If panels must be lifted, agree who can do that safely and how the structure will be made secure afterwards.
