Recurring moth sightings: finding the affected material

Repeatedly seeing small moths indoors does not show where they are developing. Different moth species use different materials, so identifying the insect helps avoid treating the wrong cupboard or room.

Trace the observations

Note where adults appear and whether there is damage to clothing, carpets or stored goods. Photograph the moth and any larvae or webbing found without spreading the contents of cupboards around the house.

Avoid a blanket response

Do not discard all clothing or spray every room before inspection. Tell the technician about previous treatment and items that remain undisturbed. The aim is to locate the material supporting activity and agree a response that includes suitable cleaning, handling and environmental treatment where justified by the findings.

Different cupboards can have different sources

If moths appear near food storage as well as clothing, record both areas. The same household can contain more than one insect concern. Provide samples or photographs for identification rather than assuming every moth seen indoors develops in wool or requires the same response.
