Wasps at a roof edge: deciding when to investigate

A steady pattern of wasps entering one point near a roof can suggest a nest, but casual flying around gutters may have another explanation. Watching from a safe distance helps describe the activity without disturbing it.

Observe without approaching

Note the entry location and whether insects repeatedly use it. Keep away from ladders, loft openings and the flight path. A photograph showing the building location can be more useful than trying to get close to the insects.

Do not block the entrance

Sealing a suspected active nest entrance can redirect activity and complicate treatment. Ask for identification and an assessment of access, especially above doors or windows. Explain any vulnerable occupants and where people need to pass so the technician can plan a suitable response for the site.

A roof photograph can be enough to start

Show the suspected opening in relation to a door, window or gutter rather than approaching for an insect close-up. The contractor needs to understand access and the household route past it. If a photograph cannot be taken safely, a clear description is preferable.
