Wasps or bees? Why identification changes the advice

Buzzing insects around a wall or roof need identifying before treatment. Wasps, honey bees and other bees can look similar at a distance but may call for very different management.

Describe the activity

Photograph from a safe position and note whether insects enter a cavity, gather in a cluster or visit flowers. Avoid disturbing the area to obtain a better picture. Shape, appearance and behaviour together help identification.

Ask about the appropriate response

Do not spray simply because insects are near the house. A bee issue may require advice from an appropriate specialist, while an active wasp nest may need a separate assessment. Tell the technician about access and nearby doors or play areas so the advice considers the insects and how the space is used.

Mention any clustering

A mass of insects grouped in one place is different information from a few insects visiting plants. Describe what you see without touching the group. A specialist can advise what further identification is needed and whether the location calls for a different access plan or response.
