Why moving rooms may complicate a bed bug problem

It is understandable to want to sleep elsewhere when bed bugs are suspected. Moving bedding and possessions through the house can, however, make it harder to contain and assess a problem.

Ask before relocating belongings

Avoid carrying mattresses, pillows and upholstered furniture into unaffected rooms. Describe where people have slept since the first signs appeared so the inspection can consider those areas. Do not assume an empty bedroom is automatically clear.

Get an agreed plan

Tell the technician which sleeping arrangements are realistic for your household. Preparation, access and any temporary restrictions should follow the method selected. If belongings need to be moved or bagged, ask how to do that without spreading insects, rather than improvising a whole-house rearrangement before the inspection.

Mention alternative sleeping areas

Sofas, spare beds and rooms used after the initial concern may be relevant to inspection. Tell the technician about those changes without moving furniture again to recreate the original arrangement. An accurate account is more useful than making the room look as though nothing has changed.
