Air bricks and vents: rodent proofing that preserves airflow

Ventilation openings should not simply be filled to stop pests. Airflow serves the building, and an unsuitable repair can create a maintenance problem while failing to address other access points.

Assess the condition

Check from accessible areas for broken grilles, loose surrounds or damage nearby. Photograph the opening without inserting objects or covering it. Mention damp concerns and any known ventilation requirements when seeking advice.

Ask about a suitable solution

A repair or protective fitting should account for the vent's purpose, the species suspected and the surrounding surface. Keep airflow requirements explicit in the proposal. Where activity is already present inside, discuss treatment and proofing together so the timing and extent of repairs are based on the findings rather than only the visible grille.

Include the surrounding masonry

A sound grille can sit beside broken mortar or a damaged frame. Record the complete opening rather than only the vent cover. The contractor can then assess whether a suitable repair needs to address the surround as well as the protective fitting while preserving the required airflow.
