Pest proofing before winter: prioritising visible defects

A pre-winter check can highlight building openings before colder weather increases concern about pests indoors. The most useful approach is to prioritise defects rather than sealing everything indiscriminately.

Walk the accessible exterior

Check door edges, visible pipe penetrations and damaged vents from a safe position. Photograph gaps and note water damage or loose materials. Keep required ventilation open and leave electrical or gas-related work to appropriate professionals.

Plan repairs around evidence

Tell the inspector about existing sightings before closing suspected routes. Active animal occupancy may change the timing of proofing. Ask which repairs you can arrange through a builder and which need a pest-specific assessment. A short, prioritised list helps work progress without overlooking structural maintenance or the purpose of an opening.

Create a priority list

Separate straightforward maintenance from suspected occupied routes and work requiring a specialist trade. This keeps the repair plan manageable and prevents every visible gap being treated as an urgent pest entrance. Revisit the list after inspection so the most relevant findings inform what happens first.
