An old wasp nest in a loft: questions before removal

Discovering a paper-like nest during loft work does not tell you whether it is currently active. The next step should consider visible activity, safe access and the planned work around it.

Avoid disturbing it initially

Do not reach into the nest or move nearby insulation to investigate. Observe from an accessible safe position and tell the contractor whether insects are seen using the area. Loft entry also carries separate access and fall risks.

Discuss the reason for removal

Explain whether insulation, wiring or other maintenance is planned. Ask for identification and advice on whether removal is needed and how it can be carried out safely. An assessment should distinguish the nest itself from any building defects that may allow future access, rather than assuming every old nest needs immediate treatment.

Check before scheduled loft work

Mention the nest when booking an electrician, insulation contractor or roofer, even if you have not noticed insects recently. They need to assess their own access safely. An informed plan prevents routine maintenance from becoming an accidental disturbance of an area that has not yet been checked.
