Bed bug signs: why bites alone are not enough

Waking with bites can prompt concern about bed bugs, but a skin reaction alone cannot identify the cause. Inspection of the room and any insects found gives a stronger basis for deciding what to do.

Look for physical evidence

From accessible areas, check mattress seams, bed-frame joints and nearby furniture for insects or dark spotting. Take clear photographs without spreading belongings to other rooms. If you find an insect, ask how to keep it safely for identification.

Avoid treating on a guess

Repeatedly spraying a room before inspection can complicate assessment and expose occupants unnecessarily. Describe travel, second-hand furniture and the rooms affected without assuming any one event caused the problem. Seek medical advice for concerning symptoms; pest inspection addresses the environmental evidence rather than diagnosing bites.

Photographs need context

A close-up of an insect is helpful, but include where it was found and an indication of size. Mark the room and item rather than relying on a phone's file order. A technician can then interpret the image alongside other signs instead of identifying the entire problem from one detail.
