Second-hand furniture: checking for bed bugs before bringing it home

Used furniture can be a good purchase, but upholstered items and bed frames deserve a careful check before entering the home. An attractive appearance does not show that concealed seams and joints are clear.

Inspect before collection

Look at seams, folds, joints and the underside where accessible. Ask about the item's history and whether it has been stored with other furniture. Dark marks or an unfamiliar insect should prompt identification rather than an immediate assumption.

Avoid spreading a suspected problem

If concerns arise after delivery, keep the item in place and seek inspection advice instead of moving it repeatedly between rooms. Do not abandon suspected infested furniture in a communal corridor. Discuss safe handling and disposal arrangements if needed, particularly in shared Edinburgh buildings where other residents could be affected.

Consider transport and storage

Ask where the furniture was kept before collection and whether covers or packaging conceal seams. If you are unsure about evidence, pause before bringing it inside and seek identification advice. The decision is easier before an item has been assembled and moved among other belongings.
