Bed bugs after travel: a calm approach to checking luggage

Travel is one possible route for bed bugs to reach a property, but returning from a trip does not mean your home is infested. A measured check is more useful than unnecessary pesticide use.

Check belongings thoughtfully

Look at accessible luggage seams and folds before putting the case into long-term storage. If you notice an unfamiliar insect, photograph it and seek identification. Avoid moving potentially affected belongings around several rooms.

Respond to evidence

Keep a note of what was seen, where and when. Follow fabric care labels and obtain specific advice if items may be affected; unsuitable heat or chemicals can damage possessions. If signs appear around beds or furniture, an inspection can establish whether there is an active problem and explain what preparation is appropriate.

Avoid preventive spraying of luggage

A trip without any evidence of bed bugs does not justify treating the home or suitcase with insecticide. Inspect and ask for advice if something is found. If luggage may be affected, request item-specific handling instructions rather than applying a room product to personal belongings.
