Carpet beetles or moths? Identifying textile damage

Damaged fabrics can be affected by more than one textile pest. A treatment aimed at moths may miss the relevant source if the evidence instead points to carpet beetles or another cause.

Look for more than holes

Photograph insects, larvae, shed skins and the damaged material where accessible. Note whether the fabric was in a cupboard, beneath furniture or stored in a loft. Keep suspect items separate rather than moving them through the home.

Ask for an assessment

Tell the technician about previous treatments and all affected materials. Identification helps guide cleaning, fabric handling and any environmental treatment. Do not spray garments indiscriminately or discard every item before the findings are understood. The room and belongings may require different practical steps.

Include hidden textile storage

Unused rugs, spare blankets and carpet offcuts may be relevant to inspection alongside the damaged item. List their locations and keep them separate. The contractor can then assess which materials warrant attention rather than assuming that damage in one room requires the same response throughout the property.
