Gulls on roofs in Scotland: planning prevention responsibly

Gull activity on a roof needs a considered response. Wild birds and their nests and eggs are protected, so preventing problems and arranging an assessment are different from taking action against an active nest.

Start with site information

Record landing areas, food sources and reports from occupants without entering the roof space or disturbing birds. Tell the contractor about previous nesting and any planned roof maintenance.

Discuss lawful options

Ask what non-lethal prevention is suitable and whether licensing advice is required for the proposed work. Do not assume an annual visit gives permission to remove nests. Roof access, the species present and the stage of activity all affect the plan, so discuss arrangements early rather than leaving decisions until work is about to begin.

Arrange planning before roof works

If maintenance is proposed, tell the roofer and bird contractor about current or previous nesting concerns. Protected-species checks should be addressed before work starts. Early communication helps separate lawful prevention from work that may need specific advice, permissions or licensing at the actual time of activity.
