Scratching at night: mice, rats or something else?

Scratching above a bedroom or behind a wall can be unsettling, but sound alone cannot identify the animal. Rodents, birds and other causes need different responses, so inspection should come before treatment.

Build a simple record

Note the time, location and length of each noise. If it moves between rooms, mark that too. Look from accessible areas for droppings, gnaw marks or damaged packaging without entering a cramped loft or opening electrical fittings.

Avoid guessing the treatment

Do not put bait into an inaccessible wall void or close a suspected entrance simply because noise is nearby. Describe the building layout and any external sightings to the technician. Identifying the species and its route is more useful than treating the loudest part of the house.

When the sound changes

Tell the inspector if the noise stops when lights are switched on or appears in a new area. These observations are clues rather than a diagnosis. Avoid repeatedly tapping walls to provoke a response, because that changes the pattern you are trying to describe.
