Restaurant pest prevention: a closing-time checklist

A consistent closing routine can help a restaurant reduce accessible food and spot maintenance issues early. It supports professional monitoring but does not replace investigation of an active pest report.

Check food and waste

Follow the business's food-safety procedures for storage and cleaning. Keep waste containers closed, review spills beneath accessible equipment and note damaged packaging. Avoid leaving an unexplained sighting for the next shift without recording it.

Check the building and handover

Report damaged door seals, leaks and openings around services. Leave agreed monitoring points in place and accessible. Assign each maintenance concern to a named role and record completion. A short routine followed daily is more useful than a long checklist that staff cannot apply during a busy close.

Make the checklist usable

Choose a small number of actions that staff can complete and verify at the end of a shift. Assign an escalation route for problems that need maintenance. A missing seal or persistent leak should lead to a logged repair, rather than becoming a repeatedly ticked observation with no follow-up.
